In cooperation with the German Aviation Research Society (GARS) and airliners.de, the PtX Lab Lausitz is happy
to host the workshop on The Economics of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs).
As the aviation industry faces growing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) have emerged as a key pathway toward decarbonization. SAFs offer the potential to significantly lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuels, while maintaining compatibility with existing aircraft and infrastructure. However, widespread adoption of SAFs remains constrained by economic challenges, including high production costs, limited scalability, market uncertainty, and the need for supportive policy frameworks.
Topics in focus
This research workshop seeks to explore the evolving economics of SAFs—from production and supply chain logistics to pricing mechanisms, investment models, and policy incentives. We invite contributions that examine the financial viability, cost-competitiveness, market dynamics, and socio-economic implications of SAF development and deployment.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Cost drivers and techno-economic assessments of SAF pathways
- Economic impacts and net benefits of SAF-related regulations and subsidies
- Market-based measures and pricing strategies to accelerate SAF demand
- Supply chain economics and infrastructure needs for SAF adoption and production
- Book and Claim chain of custody for SAF certification as market enabler
- Innovative financing and de-risking mechanisms for SAF production
Alongside the workshop there will be a social programme, possibly with an excursion to Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU).
Costs: Attendance is free, but becoming a GARS member is encouraged.
