On 13 May 2025, we will discuss securing critical resources for the EU in the production of electricity-based sustainable aviation fuels (eSAF) in Brussels.
Electricity-based Sustainable Aviation Fuels (eSAF) will play a key role in achieving a climate neutral aviation industry by 2050. Power-to-liquid (PtL) is currently the most promising eSAF pathway: It is produced from green hydrogen and captured CO₂ and can be used as a climate-neutral drop-in alternative to fossil fuels.
But what resources are critical to different PtL production pathways? What are present challenges in securing their supply and how can we effectively address them?
Workshop Event in Brussels "The raw materials behind e-kerosene: Securing critical resources for the EU"
The PtX Lab Lausitz is addressing these questions not only as part of its research, but also in its current study on the raw material demand and availability for net-zero aviation, which was published in November 2024.
The study shows: Among other things, access to CO₂ sources, renewable electricity, hydrogen and critical metals such as nickel, platinum and iridium are crucial for sustainable and scalable PtL production. The focus is particularly on electrolysis technologies for hydrogen production and CO₂ capture - both in terms of their raw material intensity and their global availability.
Based on these findings, the PtX Lab Lausitz invites you to the workshop event ‘The raw materials behind e-kerosene: Securing critical resources for the EU’ on 13 May 2025 in Brussels. Join political decision-makers and representatives from industry and associations to discuss how the raw material base for PtL kerosene in the EU can be secured in the long term.
With keynote contributions from Isabelle Dupraz, Deputy Director of the European Initiative for Energy Security (EIES) and Alessandra Hool, Managing Director of the ESM Foundation, this event sets the stage for informed and action-oriented dialogue.
We will share policy recommendations based on our latest study. The German version can be found in our publication list and English version will follow. We then invite you to come together in expert workshops to exchange ideas on these recommendations and explore possible pathways for the future of raw materials for PtL.
Join us and shape the future of sustainable aviation in Europe.
