PtX Lab Talk #15: Setting the Course for the eSAF Market Ramp-Up

The successful market ramp-up of synthetic aviation fuel (eSAF) requires early political decisions. This is the only way to drive forward investment in production and the expansion of the necessary infrastructure.
In PtX Lab Talk #15, entitled "Setting the Course for the eSAF Market Ramp-Up – Focus on Political Instruments" on 11 December 2025 from 1.00 p.m. to 2.30 p.m., we will focus on two key levers that can drive the market ramp-up of eSAF: the promotion of investment and operating costs, and public procurement.
Support instruments for CAPEX (capital expenditure for plants and infrastructure) and OPEX (operating expenditure for operation and maintenance) can help to minimise investment risks, accelerate the market ramp-up and create planning security for companies. While CAPEX subsidies primarily support the development of new production capacities, OPEX subsidies help to ensure economic operation in the start-up phase.
Public procurement can also play an important role here – for example, as a complementary instrument to generate demand and establish innovative technologies on the market at an early stage. In addition, the industry is investigating how double auction mechanisms can be further strengthened through targeted CAPEX and OPEX subsidies. The aim is to facilitate initial bids from suppliers, promote market entry and thus increase overall market dynamics.
