‘Regional Hydrogen Tour’ pays a visit to Lusatia

On 26 February 2024, Brandenburg’s Minister for the Economy Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Steinbach visited Lusatia as part of the ‘Regional Hydrogen Tour’, to find out more about hydrogen projects and initiatives in this region. Turnout at the event, organised by the regional Lausitz-Spreewald planning association and held in the Startblock B2 start-up centre at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU), was good, with many representatives from business, politics and research in attendance. Dr Harry Lehmann, Director of PtX Lab Lausitz, and Deputy Director Anita Demuth were also among the guests. The event started with a look behind the scenes at the latest developments at Länder and federal level in Germany in relation to hydrogen, followed by several company presentations. The main agenda item for the event was a Q&A with the Minister and a freeform discussion among all of the delegates.

We want to give our region active support for mastering the transition from a lignite-based economy to a forward-looking, post-fossil energy region

As a think and do tank for fuels and basic materials from green hydrogen, PtX Lab Lausitz establishes a technical basis for the environmentally friendly production and use of Power-to-X (PtX) products. “For a successful energy transition and faster climate change mitigation, we need both renewables and PtX technologies. Sustainably produced hydrogen and its derivatives are key factors for sector coupling. In the future, these need to be deployed in particular where the direct use of green electricity is either insufficient or impossible,” explains Dr Harry Lehmann. For PtX Lab Lausitz, however, it’s not merely about prioritising the use of hydrogen: the market ramp-up being pursued for PtX products also offers economic opportunities for Lusatia as a region. “We want to give our region active support for mastering the transition from a lignite-based economy to a forward-looking, post-fossil energy region,” Lehmann continues.

In 2022, Economy Minister Steinbach visited each of the five regional planning associations in the State of Brandenburg for the first time as part of his ‘Regional Hydrogen Tour’. The focus of these visits was to engage in in-depth dialogue on the subject of hydrogen with regional actors, policymakers, local government and industrial hydrogen networks.
