No sustainable chemical industry without Power-to-X

Hydrogen molecule

At the PtX Lab Talk on November 23, 2023, experts outlined the increasing importance of Power-to-X for a sustainable chemical industry.

As the third largest industry in the industrial sector, the chemical industry faces the challenge of reducing emissions. In particular, over 80 per cent of the carbon required in almost all basic materials - arguably the most important element in modern chemistry - currently comes from fossil sources. Green hydrogen and power-to-X technologies offer great potential for switching the chemical industry to a sustainable raw material base. However, the process and value chains should not only be economically viable, but also resource-efficient and sustainable. The aim is to find and establish efficient ways to achieve fossil-free chemistry.

But is the transformation of chemical value chains even possible? What impact will this have on raw materials? And what role will power-to-X technologies play in this? We discussed these questions at our PtX Lab Talk on November 23, 2023 on the topic of "Green chemicals: How much Power-to-X does a sustainable chemical industry need?". Over 90 participants took part in the eighth edition of our digital event series.

Speakers of the day:

Dr. Florian Ausfelder, head of subdivision on energy and climate at DECHEMA Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e.V.

"Transformation of the German chemical industry: The role of power-to-X"

Paul Münnich, Project Manager Climate-Neutral Industry at Agora Energiewende

"Efficient paths to fossil-free chemistry. The three cornerstones for the transformation of chemical value chains"

Ylva Kloo, Junior researcher at Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie gGmbH

"Meta-Analysis of Chemical Industry Scenario Studies and Roadmaps - Implications on feedstocks"

Clemens Schneider, Senior Researcher at Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie gGmbH
