Uniform criteria for sustainable hydrogen: Lusatian think-and-do tank is working with the Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V. (DIN - German Institute for Standardisation) to standardise assessment and certification systems for hydrogen derivatives
The consortium project “Standardisation Roadmap for Hydrogen Technologies”, promoted by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), supports the market ramp-up of hydrogen technologies and the establishment of a relevant quality infrastructure. Norms, standards and legal conditions form the basic framework for the market ramp-up of hydrogen.
As part of the standardisation roadmap for hydrogen technology, the "Sustainability and Verification" working group has identified a great need for comparability in the assessment and certification systems of hydrogen and its derivatives at national, European and international level.
Experts from economy, science, politics and society, including employees of PtX Lab Lausitz, are working on a standardised criteria catalogue that takes ecological, economic and social sustainability aspects into consideration following ISO 13065 “Sustainability criteria for bioenergy”. Currently, various mandatory and voluntary certification systems exist that are non-uniform and lack an integrated approach to relevant sustainability aspects.
At national level, different assessments lead to a lack of comparability, complex tests and a lack of transparency in the assessment of the sustainability of products. A national project, probably implemented as a DIN/TS or DIN standard, is intended to help remedy this situation. The working title is: “Sustainability criteria for hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives”.
