Our webinar series will look at the financial barriers, existing challenges and possible solutions needed to realise the potential of PtX.
As the world transitions to renewable energy, Power-to-X (PtX) solutions are becoming increasingly important. They bridge the gap between renewable energy production and its application in sectors such as aviation, shipping, and the chemical industry. Power-to-Liquid (PtL) solutions are being explored globally, particularly for producing Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). Green ammonia production will be key for sustainable fertilizers in the agricultural industry while green hydrogen finds apllication in a great number of fields.
However, scaling PtX projects faces significant financial challenges.
In this webinar series PtX Lab Talk+ the three organisations International PtX Hub, Agora Verkehrswende and PtX Lab Lausitz join forces to discuss with international experts the topic of market entry and finance for PtX. The webinars will address the financial barriers, existing challenges and possible solutions needed to unlock the potential of PtX. The three sessions will take place weekly from 14:00 to 15:30 on 12, 19 and 26 November 2024.
Here you can find out more about our online event series PtX Lab Talk+ entitled ‘Scaling Power-to-X: Solutions to Financial and Market Barriers’. Information on the content and speakers will be updated here regularly.
Session 3: "Sketching the Future of PtX Finance"
The third session of this webinar series focuses on the future of PtX project funding. Experts will discuss possible solutions and propose new tools to overcome the financial barriers explored in previous meetings and better integrate existing instruments. From blended financing models to advance purchase agreements, this session aims to showcase best practice examples and identify concrete recommendations for creating a financing ecosystem that supports sustainable PtX development.
Event Date: 26 November 2024, 02:00 p.m. - 03:30 p.m.
Organised by: International PtX Hub
Speaker Session 3:
- Christoph Michel, Senior Financial Advisor, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)
- Adeline Duclos, Associate Programme Office on ETAF, IRENA
- Álvaro Castro, Financial Advisor on Financial Service Assistance (FSA) Programme, GIZ Chile
- Statements from FSA partner projects in Chile

Session 2: "Scoping Existing Mechanisms for Financing PtX"
The financial instruments currently available to support PtX projects will be analysed in this event. From the perspective of the financial sector and companies, we will find out why the instruments used today have not yet been able to sufficiently accelerate the ramp-up.
Event Date: 19 November 2024, 02:00 p.m. - 03:30 p.m.
Organised by: Agora Verkehrswende
Speaker Session 2:
- Jan-Hendrik Petersen, Managing Director, 360 Asset Finance
- Megersa Abera Abate, Senior Transport Economist, The World Bank
- Sebastian Dinh, Programme Manager Electricity-based Fuels, NOW GmbH
Zusammenfassung Session 2:
The second session examined why current financial mechanisms have yet to adequately accelerate the ramp-up of Power-to-X (PtX) technologies. Jan-Hendrik Petersen, Megersa Abera Abate und Sebastian Dinh highlighted the indispensable role of e-fuels for aviation and maritime transport, stressing the urgency of large-scale production supported by international sustainability standards, regulatory clarity, and financial security.
Speakers pointed to the high-risk nature of PtX projects in immature markets, requiring innovative financial solutions and greater public-sector support to ensure long-term cash flow stability. Mechanisms like PtL Kero, a German subsidy initiative for sustainable fuel production, and Africa’s potential for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, were explored as promising pathways. However, these require de-risking measures, such as loan guarantees and subsidies, to close investment and cost gaps.
The session concluded with a consensus that addressing PtX barriers demands a combination of approaches implemented in parallel to achieve meaningful progress.

Session 1: "Navigating Market Barriers and Financial Risks to PtX"
Get a comprehensive overview of the barriers to market entry and financing for PtX projects from the perspective of project developers. Experts in various PtX technologies will present the current status of their projects and discuss the challenges they face when putting together financing. They will also highlight the risks they have perceived from the perspective of banks and investors.
Event Date: 12 November 2024, 02:00 p.m. - 03:30 p.m.
Organised by: PtX Lab Lausitz
Speaker Session 1:
- Daniel Stähr, Expert, PtX Lab Lausitz
- Prasad Joshi, Head of Business Development, AM Green/Greenko Group
- Thore Lohmann, Executive Director of Operating Unit Fertilizer & Methanol, Thyssenkrupp Uhde
Summary of Session 1:
In the first session, we discussed key market entry and financing barriers for PtX projects. Thore Lohmann, Prasad Joshi and Daniel Stähr explained the technological, regulatory and financial challenges facing the sector. They identified hurdles from a project perspective, such as regulatory barriers, unclear requirements and constant energy prices. These factors influence the transformation of ammonia production from grey/blue to green. Our experts concluded that fewer but more targeted regulations, uniform and transparent standards, energy security and stable, long-term framework conditions are necessary to enable the market ramp-up and to secure investments.

About PtX Lab Talk+
Our online event series PtX Lab Talk+ is entering the next round. Together with Agora Verkehrswende and the International PtX Hub, we, the PtX Lab Lausitz, are organising a three-part online event on the topic of ‘Scaling Power-to-X: Solutions to Financial and Market Barriers’.
Each session in this series will guide participants through one aspect of the current overall situation. From identifying the current barriers to designing future financing models that can enable large-scale deployment.
From 12 November 2024 to 26 November 2024, the PtX Lab Talk+ will take place as a video conference via Zoom every Tuesday from 02:00 p.m. to 03:30 p.m. The results and video recordings will be published here afterwards.
