5 Years of the PtX Lab Lausitz: From Feasibility to the PtX Market Ramp-Up

For the past five years, the PtX Lab Lausitz has been supporting and advising the political, business and wider communities on the path to greenhouse gas neutrality. What began as an institution investigating the technological feasibility of Power-to-X (PtX) has evolved into a ‘think-and-do’ tank that is playing a hands-on role in shaping the PtX market ramp-up. To mark the anniversary, a celebration was held in Cottbus on 8 September 2026, attended by around 100 invited guests. 
The Cottbus-based centre of excellence operates on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and was founded in 2021 under the Strukturstärkungsgesetzes Kohleregionen (StStG).

Dr Harry Lehmann, Head of the PtX Lab Lausitz, summarised the achievements to date in his celebratory speech: „Musste man vor einigen Jahren noch erklären, was Power-to-X überhaupt ist, ist die Technologie heute Bestandteil industrieller Strategien und politischer Maßgaben. Gleichzeitig ist aus dem PtX Lab Lausitz ein Think-and-Do-Tank geworden, der Wissen in Wirkung übersetzt. Den Weg von der Machbarkeit zum Markthochlauf sind wir in den vergangenen fünf Jahren ein gutes Stück gegangen."

Four specialist areas, one common goal

Drawing on four specialist areas – PtX Basic Materials, PtX Mobility, PtX Policy and Market Ramp-Up, and PtX Technology – the team at the PtX Lab Lausitz develops science-based analyses, scenarios and technology assessments, and translates these into concrete policy recommendations: for the decarbonisation of the chemical industry, for electricity-based fuels in aviation and maritime transport, and for a resilient, resource-efficient PtX economy. With the planned power-to-liquid demonstration plant in Lusatia, attention is now increasingly turning to industrial testing – the next step on the path to market ramp-up.

Kurt-Christoph von Knobelsdorff, Director-General at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), also commented on the significance of the PtX Lab Lausitz for policy and the region: „Fünf Jahre PtX Lab Lausitz sind eine gute Gelegenheit, noch einmal darauf hinzuweisen, dass Klimaneutralität ohne erneuerbare Moleküle nicht zu erreichen ist. Die Transformationsaufgabe ist riesig, und deshalb war es eine exzellente Idee, in Cottbus ein Kompetenzzentrum für PtX-Anwendungen aufzubauen, das wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse und fachliche Expertise in politische Handlungsempfehlungen übersetzt. Es gibt noch sehr viel zu tun – das PtX Lab Lausitz wird weiterhin dringend gebraucht!"

Expertise in structural change in Lusatia

Dr Klaus Freytag, the Brandenburg Minister-President’s representative for Lusatia, emphasised the importance of the Lusatian Lab for the region’s structural transformation: „Das PtX Lab Lausitz ist als fester Baustein der Transformation in der Lausitz im Investitionsgesetz Kohleregionen 2020 verankert worden. Transformation braucht nicht nur Investitionen und Infrastruktur, sondern auch Wissen und Kompetenz. Das PtX Lab Lausitz hat in den vergangenen fünf Jahren genau diese Kompetenz national wie international aufgebaut, Netzwerke geschaffen und Menschen und Institutionen zusammengebracht. Die Lausitz ist nicht nur Ort des Strukturwandels – sie ist ein Ort der Zukunftstechnologien, der Wissenschaft und der klimaneutralen Industrie, gerade auch dank des Lausitzer Labs."

ZUG Managing Director Dr Constanze Haug, speaking also on behalf of ZUG Managing Director Stefan Demuth, offered her congratulations to the staff present and to the representatives from partner institutions and associations: „In unseren Kompetenzzentren bündeln wir Fachwissen, Praxiserfahrung und Vernetzung, um wirksame Lösungen in unterschiedlichen Themenfeldern des Umwelt-, Klima- und Naturschutzes zu erarbeiten. Fünf Jahre PtX Lab Lausitz stehen für eine beeindruckende Entwicklung und wichtige Meilensteine, die das Team seit der Gründung erreicht hat – und für die erfolgreiche Rolle, die das Lab inzwischen als Kompetenzzentrum für Power-to-X-Technologien einnimmt."
