PtX Lab Lausitz opens dialogue for sustainable fuels in maritime transport
The maritime industry faces the task of reconciling technical, economic and regulatory requirements with international climate protection goals. Against this backdrop, PtX Lab Lausitz hosted the first Maritime Round Table on Power-to-X (PtX) fuels on 20 November 2025, opening up a new space for dialogue on sustainable fuels in maritime transport under the guiding question ‘Is the hunger for it insatiable?’.
The event took place in Hamburg and brought together key players from industry, logistics, research and administration. The aim of the new format is to support the demand-oriented market ramp-up of sustainable PtX fuels and to develop practical solutions for their use in international shipping. The Maritime Round Table was planned, organised and moderated by Kerstin Klinkenberg, consultant at PtX Lab Lausitz.
PtX as an essential component of the maritime energy transition
Since direct electrification is not feasible for international shipping in the foreseeable future, alternatives are needed. In addition to technical and structural measures to reduce CO2 emissions in shipping (lower speeds, optimised hulls or efficient operating strategies), green, electricity-based PtX fuels are considered a key technology on the road to climate neutrality.
However, their future availability, quality and secure supply pose considerable challenges for the maritime industry. Not only technical feasibility, but also questions of economic viability, regulatory frameworks and fuel supply resilience are coming into sharper focus.

Dialogue between industry, science and politics remains crucial to accelerating market ramp-up while ensuring a reliable supply. PtX Lab Lausitz will continue to actively support this process.
Exchange along the entire value chain
The market ramp-up of sustainable PtX fuels can only succeed if we work together. The Maritime Round Table creates a platform for this: along the entire value chain – from production, storage, transport and warehousing to application on board – perspectives are pooled, interfaces made visible and common scope for action explored.
The event was opened by Dr Harry Lehmann, Head of PtX Lab Lausitz, who emphasised the importance of maritime transport in his welcoming address. Anita Demuth, Head of Section PtX Mobility at the Lausitz Competence Centre, then outlined the current challenges facing international shipping.
Expert insights from practice and research
The PtX Lab Lausitz presented current work on resource availability, regulatory frameworks and sustainability criteria for PtX products. In addition, experiences from the aviation sector were shared, providing valuable insights for maritime applications.
Selected participants also enriched the event with concise short presentations on market potential, technological developments and outstanding challenges.
