New Online Tool: Potential Atlas Shows Available Sites for Wind and Solar Energy in Lusatia

Where can photovoltaic and wind power plants be built in Lusatia? How much green hydrogen can be produced as a result? A new interactive online tool provides the answers.
The PtX Lab Lausitz, in collaboration with Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, has investigated which sites in Lusatia are suitable for the installation of photovoltaic (PV) and wind power plants.
The analysis did not focus on just one category of site. In addition to traditional ground-mounted PV, the analysis also took into account PV installations on buildings and transport infrastructure (such as car parks or noise barriers), agri-PV (a combination of agricultural production and solar power generation) and floating PV (floating photovoltaic systems on lakes).
How Much Renewable Energy Potential Does Lusatia Hold?
The analysis also shows how much green electricity could be generated in future in the individual municipalities and districts of the region – and how much of this exceeds regional electricity demand. This surplus could be used in future for the production of green hydrogen and other Power-to-X (PtX) products such sustainable aviation fuels (eSAF) or e-methanol.

A Tool for an Overview: Premiering at the Online Event
The results are being made available for the first time in a specially developed, interactive online potential atlas. The tool offers not only figures but also a graphical representation of the potential overviews and enables a direct comparison of different areas and local authorities. This makes it a valuable resource for local authorities, businesses and anyone interested in the expansion of renewable energy (RE) in Lusatia.

Presentation of the Online Tool
On 29 September 2026, the potential atlas and the results of the potential analysis will be presented for the first time as part of an online event.
From 10.00 to 11.30, the project team will first provide an insight into the methodology behind the analysis and the tool’s functions, before presenting and contextualising the identified RE and PtX potentials in Lusatia.
This will be followed by a session for questions and discussion with experts from the fields of research, politics and industry.
