Power-to-X for the Aviation of Tomorrow

Anita Demuth, Head of Section PtX Mobility, in conversation during ILA Berlin.

PtX Lab Lausitz showcased its work at ILA 2026 in Berlin, highlighting the potential of sustainable aviation fuels for the future of aviation.

The ILA Berlin Air Show, held from 10 to 14 June 2026, brought together around 110,000 participants from industry, science, politics and the general public as Europe's largest aerospace event. Alongside major themes such as artificial intelligence, security and New Space, new propulsion technologies and Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) were also among the key topics discussed in shaping the future of aviation.

Demonstrating Power-to-X technologies

PtX Lab Lausitz was represented at the Berlin-Brandenburg Capital Region joint booth, together with institutions including Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) and Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU). A mini electrolysis unit at the exhibition booth illustrated the fundamentals of hydrogen production and demonstrated how renewable electricity can be converted into sustainable energy carriers.

Numerous visitors took the opportunity to learn more about current developments in Power-to-X technologies and electro-based Sustainable Aviation Fuels (eSAF). The PtX Lab team welcomed Christian Ehler, Member of the European Parliament and Coordinator of the EPP Group in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, to the booth.

Momentum for sustainable aviation fuels

Coinciding with ILA, the German Federal Government presented its new National Aviation Strategy. The strategy identifies the aerospace sector as a strategic industry and highlights its importance for innovation, value creation and Germany's defence capabilities. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and new propulsion technologies are identified as key building blocks for the further development of the sector and are intended to help combine climate protection with industrial development.

In addition, the Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking, the State of Brandenburg and the Free State of Saxony signed a strategic cooperation agreement at the opening of ILA. The Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) between the two federal states and the European Union's aviation research and innovation programme aims to strengthen strategic collaboration in the development of sustainable aircraft technologies.

Numerous innovations in the fields of aviation, defence and space were presented at ILA.

CENA SAF Outlook 2026 provides new insights

The network aireg – Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany, of which PtX Lab Lausitz is a member, offered an extensive expert programme during ILA. One of the highlights was the presentation of the CENA SAF Outlook 2026.

The study shows that while global SAF production capacities of up to 33.7 million tonnes have been announced for 2030, only around 22 million tonnes currently appear to be realistically achievable. It also concludes that the volumes required to meet the future eSAF sub-mandate are not yet secured.

PtX Lab Lausitz at upcoming events

The experts from PtX Lab Lausitz will also participate in several specialist events in June 2026 and look forward to further professional exchange:
