PtX as a topic, exchange as a goal: Where the PtX Lab Lausitz was present

Expert Felix Schmermer in conversation at the aireg SAF Conference 2025 in Berlin

Lusatian Competence Centre has provided new impetus for a climate-neutral future and Power-to-X technologies in recent weeks

Proximity to the region: participation in the Spreewald and shooting festival in Lübbenau

On 5 July 2025, the PtX Lab Lausitz presented itself for the first time at the Spreewald and Schützenfest in Lübbenau. The traditional folk festival attracts numerous visitors from the region and beyond every year and provided a suitable setting for engaging in dialogue with the general public.

At the PtX Lab Lausitz information stand, a model of a PEM electrolyser illustrated how hydrogen is produced from water. The team also provided information on site about how green hydrogen can be used to produce sustainable fuels and raw materials for air and sea transport and for the chemical industry.

Many interested visitors to the festival took the opportunity to find out about the projects of the PtX Lab Lausitz and learn more about the role of the lab in the structural change of Lusatia.

Focus on the future of aviation: appearance at the Decarbon Days in Cottbus

The Decarbon Days took place in Cottbus from 26 to 28 June 2025 with a three-part programme consisting of an EU Summit, Tech Festival and Talent Day. The event brought together representatives from industry, science, politics and civil society to discuss ways to decarbonise energy-intensive sectors.

At the former airfield in Cottbus, the PtX Lab Lausitz took part in the event as a partner with its own exhibition stand and was actively involved in the programme: Dr Harry Lehmann, Head of the Competence Centre, discussed the role of electricity-based fuels for climate-neutral aviation on the panel "Focus topic: Net Zero Aviation". It became clear that net zero in aviation cannot be achieved without sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). In order to ramp up their production, the risk for so-called first movers in SAF production must be reduced - for example through the targeted development of a capacity market and by utilising existing subsidies.

The Competence Centre on Climate Change Mitigation in Energy-Intensive Industries (KEI) was also on site. Jakob Flechtner, Head of the KEI, took part in the dialogue "The Power of Cleantech".

Impetus for the SAF market ramp-up: The aireg SAF Conference in Berlin

At the SAF Conference of aireg e. V. (Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e. V.) in Berlin on 23 and 24 June 2025, PtX Lab Lausitz also made a strong statement with its own information stand and active participation in the conference programme. In the panel discussion "Regulatory Opportunities & Challenges", Dr Harry Lehmann introduced key requirements for the regulatory framework for SAF into the debate and emphasised the importance of reliable conditions for a successful market ramp-up.

Science meets practice: research contributions at the EUBCE in Valencia

From 9 to 12 June 2025, the PtX Lab Lausitz was represented at the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE) in Valencia. Lukas Horndasch used a poster to present options for meeting the demand for naphtha in the European chemical industry and discussed potential and alternatives with the experts on site.

Dr Harry Lehmann also spoke about securing sustainable resources for the green industrial transition in the European Union (EU) by presenting the key findings of the PtX Lab Study "Resource requirements and availability for greenhouse gas-neutral aviation". The updated version of this study can be ordered here as a free print copy in German and English.
