Limited capacities and only little time left: At the first PtX Lab Talk, the speakers showed why prioritisation in the use of synthetic fuels is so important.
How can we set priorities correctly in the use of synthetic fuels based on green hydrogen? And why is this so important? These were the questions addressed at the first PtX Lab Talk on 20 January. For ninety minutes, the digital event highlighted and, above all, discussed important fundamentals for the future of the energy transition.
Dr Harry Lehmann, head of the PtX Lab Lausitz, first gave an outline of the scientific data situation in his introductory talk. He was joined by guest speaker Dr. Valentin Batteiger from the Bauhaus Luftfahrt research facility, who went into greater depth on the analysis, particularly with regard to developments in air transport. Both speakers showed why the limited capacities of regenerative energy and the shortage of time until 2045 must lead to a prioritisation of the areas of application for synthetic fuels. The use of e-fuels in the passenger car sector, which is often discussed in public, is proving to be a mistake - due to its inefficiency compared to battery-electric drives - and must be avoided from a scientific point of view.
In the second part of the event, two breakout sessions were held to get into conversation with the 160 participants. The rounds on the topics of "Policy and Measures" and "Science and Technology" were moderated by Anita Demuth and Sebastian Voswinckel, the deputy directors of the PtX Lab Lausitz. From now on, PtX Lab Talks will be held at least four times a year to address important topics related to synthetic fuels and basic materials.
