Decarbonising shipping through sustainable fuels

The FuelEU Maritime Regulation (EU) 2023/1805 promotes the decarbonisation of shipping and encourages the use of sustainable fuels. However, it is not sufficient to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
In addition, the regulation sends a mixed signal for the expansion of sustainable fuels. The review clause and the consideration of the market situation in the mandatory use of RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) weaken demand and slow down potential investments.
