Lusatian Think and Do Tank supports the further development of a socially just, ecological and holistic sustainability framework.
The PtX Lab Lausitz has joined the ‘Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials Association (RSB)’ and shared its expertise at the annual meeting on 11 and 12 December 2024.
RSB is known for its globally recognised sustainability framework. This consists of twelve principles and criteria that describe social, legal, ecological and management practices for sustainable production in a circular economy.
For the PtX Lab, the focus of the RSB membership is on the certification systems for electricity-based fuels for aviation and maritime transport. The RSB certification offers a practical framework that covers a broad spectrum of sustainability. RSB-certified companies can mitigate their risks, tap into new markets and prove their credibility and commitment to sustainability.
RSB takes a multi-stakeholder approach to developing its sustainability standards to meet the growing demand from markets, investors and companies for credible solutions for new low-carbon products, materials and fuels.
PtX Lab contributes scientific expertise for sustainable fuels
In the field of fuels, the PtX Lab contributes its scientific expertise in the sustainable production of fuels. The Cottbus lab's published recommendations for the development of PtX sustainability standards and indicators positively influence the certification system.
The PtX Lab also demonstrates its strengths in the traceability of supply chains: In a recently published study on ‘Book & Claim for Green Jet Fuel. Trading in Certificates for Climate-Neutral Aviation’, the aviation experts from the Lusatian Think and Do Tank analyse the production and supply chains of synthetic aviation fuels (SAF).
Anita Demuth, deputy head of PtX Lab Lausitz, welcomes the RSB's accession: ‘We see great overlaps for future cooperation with the RSB, especially in the translation of scientific findings into practice. For example, our specific proposals for sustainability criteria for PtL fuels and raw materials could complement the RSB framework and be put to the test in practice in exchange with other members. We at PtX Lab Lausitz are therefore pleased to be working with the RSB to further advance the market ramp-up of environmentally friendly and sustainably produced fuels.’
About the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials Association (RSB)
The association was founded in 2007 as a scientific initiative. It is committed to mitigating climate change, restoring biodiverse ecosystems and achieving a just and sustainable transition to a circular economy. RSB promotes the transition to a biobased and circular economy that combats climate change, restores ecosystems and improves livelihoods.
The organisation is currently focusing on three areas:
- community (enabling collaboration),
- programmes ( building capability to make change happen) and
- certification (providing clarity on best practice).
Its members work in areas that overlap with the PtX Lab's priorities to jointly develop knowledge and guidelines for promoting the bio-based and circular economy. The initiative supports research, training and certification to promote sustainable practices along the supply chain (= chain of custody). It aims to support companies in innovating and scaling sustainable solutions.
