By 2030, the Eurpean Union (EU) wants to achieve a 55 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The PtX Lab Lausitz is researching the potential of synthetic e-kerosene (SAF) and will present the results in Berlin on 19 November 2024.
The EU has submitted a joint climate target to the United Nations: By 2030, greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by 55 per cent compared to 1990 levels. Each of the 27 EU countries must contribute to this. Emissions are particularly difficult to reduce in the aviation sector.
Germany has an advanced aviation industry that wants to remain at the global technological top level in the future. That is why the PtX Lab Lausitz is researching the potential for greenhouse gas-neutral air transport, where Germany and the EU can set standards.
Critical metals and raw materials are crucial for the production of e-kerosene
Synthetic e-kerosene is crucial to achieving greenhouse gas-neutral aviation in Europe by 2050. However, the production of e-kerosene requires critical metals and minerals. Greenhouse gas-neutral aviation therefore depends heavily on the availability of these raw materials.
Study shows ways to produce sufficientquantities of e-kerosene
To determine the demand for metallic and mineral resources for e-kerosene, DECHEMA e.V. and the PtX Lab Lausitz are conducting the study ‘Resource requirements and availability for GHG-neutral aviation’. The results show which technologies and sustainable production routes can be used to produce sufficient quantities of e-kerosene. The study is intended to provide decision-makers from the aviation and mining industries as well as the relevant national and European legislative bodies with a knowledge base for discussing new instruments for resource coverage in aviation.
Results of the study on the availability of critical minerals are presented
In November 2024, the results on the availability of the required critical minerals will be presented at the project's final event entitled ‘Demand and availability of resources for greenhouse gas-neutral production of power-to-liquid cerosene’.
All interested stakeholders are welcome to attend the presentation of the study results.
